چکیده
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the outcomes of lengthening post-traumatic femoral segments using a recently available magnetic intramedullary (IM) lengthening system. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. SETTING Urban level II Trauma Center. PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS Patients treated for post-traumatic femoral shortening at our institution between 2012 and 2015. We identified 17 femurs lengthened (14 men and 3 women). The mean age was 30 years (range, 11-72 years). INTERVENTION Magnetic IM lengthening system. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS Amount of lengthening achieved, consolidation index, and complications encountered. RESULTS The mean follow-up was 2.2 years (range, 1-3.7 years). Sixteen patients achieved the planned lengthening, a mean of 3.8 cm (range, 2.3-6.0 cm). Regenerate consolidation occurred at a mean of 119 days (range, 57-209 days). The mean consolidation index was 32 d/cm (range, 16-51 d/cm). Three patients (18%) experienced complications. CONCLUSION IM lengthening nails are an improvement over external fixators for treatment of post-traumatic femoral shortening. Within certain limits, their use can be extended to problems of limb-length discrepancy with angular/rotational deformity. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Therapeutic Level IV. See Instructions for Authors for a complete description of levels of evidence.

How precise is the PRECICE compared to the ISKD in intramedullary limb lengthening?
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The PRECICE intramedullary limb lengthening system uses a new technique with a magnetic rod and a motorized external remote controller (ERC) with rotational magnetic field. We evaluated the reliability and safety of the PRECICE system. METHODS We compared our preliminary results with PRECICE in 24 patients (26 nails) with the known difficulties in the use of mechanical ...
متن کاملPRECICE magnetically-driven, telescopic, intramedullary lengthening nail: pre-clinical testing and first 30 patients
Introduction: Femoral/tibial lengthening with a telescopic, magnetically-powered, intramedullary nail is an alternative to lengthening with external fixation. Methods: Pre-clinical testing was conducted of the PRECICE in a human cadaver. A retrospective review of the first 30 consecutive patients who underwent unilateral lengthening was also conducted. Nail accuracy was obtained by comparing th...
متن کاملLengthening of the humerus with intramedullary lengthening nails—preliminary report
Distraction osteogenesis of the humerus with fully implantable lengthening is now possible since the diameter of the available nails was reduced to 10 mm and below. We report on the first intramedullary lengthening cases of the humerus with two different lengthening devices (FITBONE and PRECICE). Two different approaches and implantation techniques were used. We retrospectively reviewed clinica...
متن کاملLimb Lengthening by Implantable Limb Lengthening Devices
Implantable limb lengthening using noninvasively adjusted telescopic nails dates back to 1983. The newest technology is the Precice (Ellipse Technologies). A retrospective study of the first 65 Precice nails was carried out for the treatment of limb length discrepancy (unilateral) and short stature (bilateral). Successful lengthening was achieved in all patients. There were numerous distraction...
متن کاملThe importance of reaming the posterior femoral cortex before inserting lengthening nails and calculation of the amount of reaming
BACKGROUND Lengthening nails have been used to correct limb length discrepancy caused by different etiologies, as well as for post-traumatic reasons. Two important lengthening nail-related complications are damage to the distraction mechanism and femoral fractures around the nail tip. As a result of the curved anatomy of the femur, straight nails impinge on the anterior cortex. Therefore, prope...
